Genius Hour – Crocheting

Hello! For my Genius Hour Project, I’m going to try and crochet something new. Like a hat, or a scarf! I will also try and learn the terms of stitches so I can read patterns and not just watch them on Youtube.

Right now, I can only crochet little soft toys, which is called ‘amigurumi’. I would call myself pretty good at this. I really want to try and crochet my Dad a hat for Father’s Day because my dad is a plasterer and loves hats. So that’s what I’ll do.

I started crocheting back last Christmas, as I asked for tools to learn amigurumi. These tools include of crochet hooks, balls of wool, stitch markers, polyester stuffing and tapestry needles. My great aunt, who crochets amazingly, tried to teach me to crochet something other than amigurumi one time and I completely failed. I had no clue what she was talking about. That is why I am determined to crochet something new. I only know three stitches and two of them have to do with amigurumi. I’ll probably also try to crochet myself a tote bag too. Thank you for reading my idea!

Hi! My name is Leah. I go to Cloontagh National School. I live in Cloontagh. Cloontagh National School was built in 1938, and opened in 1939. Cloontagh School has 4 class teachers, 1 learning support teacher and 2 SNAs. There are 8 people, including myself, in fifth class. Cloontagh school has 99 pupils altogether. The classrooms contain Junior infants and Senior infants, First and Second class pupils, Third and fourth class pupils and Fifth and Sixth class pupils. Cloontagh school has lots of fun activities for pupils. We have music with our lovely music teacher, Helen, on a Tuesday. We play games and read with infants on a Wednesday. We have PE on a Thursday and we play bingo with prizes on a Friday. We do a walk every year for Christmas called ‘The Jingle Bell Walk’. We also ran 5k with Michael Murphy, the Donegal football captain. We recently got an obstacle course for our school. It has loads of things that you would find in a park. It’s quite cool. The infants absolutely adore it. We also have a mini bus, shop and garda station. Only the infants and first and second class are allowed on them though. We get a football every day for our last two breaks, one o’ clock break and two o’ clock break. We start school at ten past nine and get out at ten to three, though junior and senior infants get out at ten to two.

Cloontagh is a great place in Co. Donegal, Ireland. It has lakes and rivers too. There is a waterfall in Clonmany, where you can have a relaxing walk and see the lovely waterfall. There is also a place you can visit which can educate you on the Irish famine, called The Famine Village. There is a festival in Clonmany every summer, which starts on the 1st week of august or the very end of July. It has loads of fun rides to enjoy! There was no festival in 2020 or 2021 due to covid-19. There is also another school in Clonmany. There is a youth club in Clonmany that does loads of activities with pupils from different schools.

For my genius hour, I have a little bit of an idea of what to do. I am very interested in crochet. Crochet is basically a form of knitting done with a crochet hook. I started last Christmas. I really love crocheting but I am not sure if I should do that for my genius hour. I would like to write a book for my genius hour too. I have loads of ideas but I’m not sure about any of them.
